Proudly Serving York, PA

York is the largest city in south-central Pennsylvania, and it sits right at the top of what most residents consider the natural travel corridor — I-83 south toward Baltimore, north toward Harrisburg. Country Comfort Kennels & Camp for Pets is located in Shrewsbury, PA, less than 10 minutes south of York on that same I-83 corridor. For York pet owners traveling to Baltimore, Washington, or anywhere south, we’re a natural stop — drop your dog off on the way out of town and pick up on the way back. We’re a purpose-built boarding and camp facility, not a chain kennel or a pet store add-on, and the difference shows in how your dog spends the day.

Why York Dog Owners Drive to Shrewsbury

The answer, consistently, is that they want more for their dog than a kennel run and twice-daily bathroom breaks. York has boarding options in town, and most of them are competent at keeping dogs safe. What they’re not set up to provide is a full, active, supervised day — play groups, camp activities, and the kind of social engagement that actually meets a dog’s needs during a multi-day stay.

Country Comfort built its reputation in southern York County and northern Maryland around the camp model: dogs participate in structured activities, supervised group play, and enrichment programming throughout the day. Your dog doesn’t come home from a five-day stay with five days’ worth of stored-up energy. They come home genuinely tired and content.

The location also matters. I-83 connects York directly to Shrewsbury, and for the York families who routinely travel south — to the Baltimore metro area, to Harrisburg, to the airport — the fact that Shrewsbury is on the way is a practical convenience. Drop off in the morning before hitting the highway; pick up when you return.

Individual Runs and Private Accommodations

Each boarding dog at Country Comfort stays in their own individual run — not a shared space with an unfamiliar dog. Dogs are social animals and benefit from group play, but rest and overnight time is private. Individual runs let dogs decompress, sleep without competition, and eat without resource-guarding concerns. Bedding, water, and their own food are with them in their space.

Supervised Play Groups

During the day, boarding dogs participate in play groups organized by size and temperament. Groups are managed by staff who understand dog behavior and watch interactions closely. A dog who plays rough and a dog who plays gentle might both be in a ‘medium energy’ category, but they don’t necessarily belong in the same play group — we match by play style, not just energy level. Groups rotate between indoor and outdoor areas throughout the day.

Camp Activities and Enrichment

Boarding at Country Comfort includes participation in camp activities — structured programming that gives dogs mental engagement alongside the physical exercise of group play. Dogs who have been both exercised and mentally stimulated settle much better overnight than dogs who have only run around a yard. The enrichment programming includes nose-work style games, skill reinforcement, and activities that let dogs use their instincts productively.

Individual Attention

Not every dog is a group-play dog, and not every dog is the same when they’re stressed versus comfortable. Staff at our Shrewsbury facility get to know individual dogs over the course of a stay — how they prefer to be handled, what makes them comfortable, whether they need more one-on-one time than group time. Dogs who board with us regularly tend to arrive relaxed because the environment and the people are familiar.

How Country Comfort Compares to Big-Box Boarding

York has chain pet store boarding programs in the area. They exist for the same reason chain hotels exist — standardized and accessible. The concerns we hear most frequently from York area dog owners who’ve switched:

Country Comfort is purpose-built around the dog boarding and camp operation. The boarding is the business, not an add-on. Our Shrewsbury facility is a working kennel and camp, and the space reflects that.

What to Prepare Before Your Dog's Stay

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Boarding Near York, PA

Our Shrewsbury location is approximately 10 minutes south of York on I-83. From downtown York, take I-83 south to the Shrewsbury exit. For the exact address and directions, call 717-235-3312 or visit countrycomfortkennels.com.

Rabies, DHPP (distemper/parvo combination), and Bordetella (kennel cough) are required for all boarding guests. Bordetella is particularly important in any group environment -- it spreads through respiratory droplets and is very common in dogs who have been around other dogs, including at parks and trails. Current vaccines protect your dog and the other dogs in our care. Bring your vet's records on check-in day.

Holiday periods -- Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day -- book up well in advance at our Shrewsbury facility. If you're planning travel during a major holiday, call as early as possible: 717-235-3312. We can't guarantee space if you wait until two weeks before a holiday weekend.

Senior dogs board with us regularly, and they often appreciate a quieter experience than what young dogs get in high-energy play groups. Older dogs who prefer not to be in group play can still have individual outdoor time and one-on-one attention from staff without being stuck in a run all day. Tell us about your dog when you book and we'll plan accordingly.

Yes. Size is one of the primary grouping factors for play groups. A 90-pound dog who plays gently can still accidentally injure a 12-pound dog by stepping on them -- the physics don't care about the dog's intentions. Small dogs play with small dogs, large dogs play with large dogs, and medium dogs are placed based on how they interact. We may separate further within size categories based on temperament and play style.

We monitor all boarding dogs throughout the day and evening. If your dog shows signs of illness -- vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, not eating -- we call you first and consult with a veterinarian if needed. We have contact information for local veterinary practices in case of a medical situation that needs professional attention. We do not wait to see if something resolves on its own if a dog looks genuinely unwell.

I cannot say enough good things about this kennel and it's staff. They are all so friendly and our 3 Olde English Bulldogges love to go there each and every time. During our last boarding, one of our dogs injured her dew claw and it required additional medical attention. The staff informed us of the injury right away and a plan was made to get her in with one of the kennel's local vets. She was seen the very next morning and taken care of. I was so happy with the communication from the staff to us while we were away. I was even more happy with the care they provided to our girl. <3
